My first Smokers haven

Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.

One of the most ambitious DIY projects I took on was creating a custom stoner-themed lounge space in my backyard right after I bought my first house in Austin, Texas in 2015. Here’s how it unfolded:

  1. Design Concept: I envisioned a cozy, vibrant space that would be perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. I sketched out ideas for seating, lighting, and decor, all with a nature and elevated friendly vibe.
  2. Building a Fire Pit: The centerpiece was a circular fire pit made from stone pavers. I dug a shallow pit, lined it with gravel for drainage, and arranged the stones in a pleasing circular pattern. This became the perfect spot for gatherings.
  3. Seating Area: I built a large, rustic wooden bench around the fire pit using reclaimed wood. I also added colorful cushions for comfort. The bench was designed to accommodate several friends comfortably.
  4. Hammock Installation: I strung up a hammock between two sturdy trees nearby. It added a laid-back vibe and was perfect for lounging with a good book or enjoying a smoke.
  5. Lighting: I installed string lights overhead to create a warm, inviting atmosphere at night. I also added solar-powered lanterns around the seating area for additional ambiance.
  6. Decor: I painted a mural on a nearby fence, featuring psychedelic colors and cannabis leaves, which brought the space to life. I also added potted plants, including some herbs and small umm hemp plants* (for legal reasons) to enhance the natural feel.
  7. Art and Accessories: I crafted some DIY art pieces, like a resin table with embedded cannabis leaves and a couple of sculptures made from driftwood.

The project took several weekends to complete, but it transformed my backyard into a vibrant oasis. It became a go-to spot for friends to gather, relax, and enjoy the outdoors, making it a strong focal point for socializing and creativity.
